Breaking 40

Breaking 40 - minutes that is, not years. One goal I have is to go under 40 minutes on a 10 k run. I know I've come close in training but I want to break 40 minutes in a 10 k race. Today I ran 9.74 according to Nike Plus and it looked like I was on track to go sub-40 but the hills on Pritchard and Noel (deceptive as it is) must have slowed me down a fair bit because I finished in 41:24. Ah well, a good effort despite the time. I raced the Comox Valley Tri-K on Sunday. Finished first in my age class and carved 45 seconds off of last year's swim and 90 seconds off the run. I did the 5 k run in just over 21 minutes. I was pleased but then seeing the teenagers' winning times with near 40km/hr bikes and 18 minute runs made me realize how much faster those kids can go. Good on em. How do you maintain a 40 km per hour ride over 20 km? I am impressed.

Next event? Probably the Cowichan main triathlon in July. 1000 m swim with Olympic distance bike and run. If I do that race I'll have no trouble justifying a couple of rums with Dave the next weekend.
